A contention slot is the minimum time a host must transmit for before it can be sure that no other host packets has collided with the transmission.for CSMA/CD this must be twice the round-trip-delay(2*Td).This happens when a station at one end transmits at time=T which reaches a station at the other end at Td just when the station starts transmiting, leading to a collision. But the information about collision reaches the first station after Td,i.e,after 2*Td.Hence it is said that CSMA/CD protocole has a contention slot of 2.
