UNIVERSITY OF KALYANI

Introduction

The University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) was established in the year 1978 by the University Grants Commission (UGC). With an aim at promoting the Centre, the UGC subsequently upgraded it to level-III during 8th plan. In the Eastern region of the country, this is the only USIC, which has been upgraded to level-III by the UGC.
As a condition of upgradation, a one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Instrumentation (PGDI) course was started from the 1992-1993 academic session. The course aimed at imparting a job-oriented training programme to Honours Graduates in Physical Sciences. Later the University upgraded the course to two-years' Diploma so that the students can do better in the job market.

Meanwhile it became mandatory to get the Centre approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for all Technical Courses. Accordly to the AICTE's approval was received in July, 1999. Meanwhile, the department thought about two 4-year B. Tech courses - one in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and other in Information Technology; for which the approval from AICTE was received in 1999. From the same academic session 1999-2000, the Centre started the courses.
